Istikhara is a dua taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to ask Allah for guidance before an important decision. Whether you are deciding on marriage, a job, travel or a business step, Istikhara helps you turn to Allah and move forward with a calm heart. Below are Istikhara ki dua and the Istikhara ka tarika in simple steps.
Istikhara Ka Tarika (How to Do Istikhara)
- Make fresh wudu and choose a calm time, ideally when you will not be disturbed.
- Pray two rakat of nafl salah (voluntary prayer). Avoid the times when prayer is disliked (such as directly after Fajr until sunrise, or after Asr until Maghrib).
- After the salam, praise Allah, send salawat on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and recite the Istikhara dua.
- When the dua reaches the words "this matter", name your matter in your heart or aloud.
- Make your decision calmly, and keep seeking Allah's help with tawakkul.
Istikhara Ki Dua (Arabic)
Meaning in Short (English Translation)
"O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge and ask for strength through Your power. You have power and I do not, You know and I do not. If this matter is good for my faith, my life and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me and bless it. If it is bad for me, turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree what is good for me wherever it is, then make me content with it."
What Happens After Istikhara?
Istikhara is not only about dreams. After the dua, notice where your heart finds ease, and where doors open or close in your circumstances. Consult trusted family members and people of knowledge, and keep making dua. Repeat the Istikhara if you remain unsure.
